A Surprise Birthday Party
I didn't expect it to rain so heavily tonight.
I threw my umbrella into the trash can. It was destroyed from the strong, cold wind on the way back from the supermarket. Placing my bags of groceries onto the kitchen counter, I went in for a hot bath first. Even though there's two whole chickens waiting to be kept in the fridge, I still insisted on a bubble bath.
Tomorrow is Jacob's birthday. I had planned this party for weeks. It was hard to keep the surprise a secret when we're working and staying together. Numerous disastrous possible endings flashed through my mind. Ruined cake, uninvited guests, burnt food...sigh. I should've arranged for a party planner.
With a towel wrapped around my wet hair, I plodded towards the kitchen. Pulling my tablet from my bag, I started looking through the bookmarked recipes from various websites. He loves roasted chicken, mashed potatoes, lasagna, cream of mushroom soup, well, pretty much everything that I loved as well. I ordered more finger food from the caterer that was in charged of my brother's wedding cocktail party. I wanted to make his favorite dishes by myself cause I didn't had the time to do it often.
I started marinating the chickens with self-made herb butter as instructed by the online chef. I tried to do as many preparations as I could to minimize the jobs that I have to do tomorrow. I had to work fast as he'll be back by 11pm after his gathering with his childhood friends. He rarely checks the fridge but I'll still be hiding the chickens behind our tubs of chocolate chip ice creams.
We went to bed at 12 midnight after some chit chatting about work and friends. I requested for a day off the next day to prepare for the event. He had to attend a meeting at work as planned on purpose by his boss to get him away from home.
After he left for work, I sprinted into action! Mandy and Amanda will be helping me with the balloons, banners and all the party stuffs. Jay, Keith and Vic will be arriving by 2pm to assist with the cooking and setups. Our plan was to be ready before 5pm. By 4.45pm, the balloons and banners are up and ready, our finger food has arrived, home cooked meals are steaming hot, guests are all here and everyone's vehicles are parked away from the neighborhood.
I told Jacob that I've booked seats at a new restaurant for dinner after his meeting. He will be back to fetch me out anytime now. I put on the blue dress that he bought for my birthday. Everyone is ready for the ultimate surprise for Jacob. We were seating around talking about the recent news about world currency. We were relaxed because we'll be able to hear if Jacob's Subaru enters the driveway. We snacked on some peanut buttercups and soft drinks while waiting.
Suddenly the front door opened and Jacob appeared. Everyone was shocked and Jay even chocked on his Pepsi. Jacob spotted the birthday banner and broke the silence with an awkward laugh.
" I'll be back in 5 minutes, I left my suitcase in the car." He shot a meaningful glance at me and winked.
After he left, we laughed at our ignorance and ran out to get him. Vic and Keith dragged Jacob back in forcefully and placed him in front of everybody. We shouted a high decibel 'Happy Birthday' which would earn us a complain from the neighbors. He held his hands up and bowed to us in appreciation. We hugged tight and he whispered thank you. The party officially started as Jacob pops open a champagne in the kitchen. I was glad he adores the roasted chicken and seafood lasagna that we made for him!
Even though we didn't get to surprise him as planned, the surprise was still a success! It was great to see him so happy around his friends that has been with him his whole life! I love him, and I would like him to enjoy every important days of his life to the fullest.
