Just a Thought
How much does one understand the difference between criticism and witticism? It's a fine line between what we call a joke and an insult. It's true that the way the receiver deciphers a certain sentence determines the atmosphere of the whole conversation. A simple question such as 'Are you stupid?' can be laughed off entirely or could be taken seriously. Are we supposed to label the receiver as too sensitive, or the speaker as being insensitive?
There are a few factors that determine the way we digest mean comments. *cough* 'Factors', it has been years since I last use that word in an article. Remember the high school exams where we are required to list down five factors that regulate the quality of our environment? Go Green! Bullshit, the only factor that is affecting the environment is Homo sapiens; take them off the planet and you get what you call 'the perfect place to live', for wild animals, at least.
First off, the relationship between both parties plays a huge role. Close friends, siblings, cousins, acquaintances, rivals or lovers...or you know, just...friends. For example, if my brother calls me stupid, which by the way, will not ever happen cause he's like the best brother ever. I won't feel insulted; I will take it as a joke and give my all famous middle finger in his face. On the contrary, if someone I just knew or someone whom I don't give a shit calls me stupid, I'll be like 'What the fuck is your problem?' And of course me being gentle and all, I won't say that to his/her face. I don't want to get a punch in my already fugly face, thank you very much. And mind you, 'fugly' is a legit word, okay? It's so legit that I'm adding this word to my Microsoft Words' dictionary.
My mama raised a lady, aite? In time, I learned that ignorance is a beautiful thing that everyone has to worship. In hipster's term, ignorance spells I don't give a fuck. There's an infinite list of things that you can't control no matter how good you are, like getting Wi-Fi installed by your death stone. You know why people aren't doing that for you? Because they're not thinking far enough; it's not about my convenience of using the Wi-Fi, I'm a fucking corpse damn it. It's about the bragging rights. It's about being in heaven and laughing at my neighbor for not having visitors when there are tons of them at my feet.
See I told you I can't write serious stuff. I didn't learn English by reading encyclopedias or research papers. I learned to read, write and speak English by reading teen novels. They don't use bombastic terms like...like 'implement' or 'coitus', they used words like 'do' or 'fuck'. And do you know why I can't be a journalist? Because I always write out of topic, just like what I'm doing right now. Thank you Ms. English Teacher from Sec 5 who pointed that out! You must be very heartbroken to learn that I've not changed for the past 7 years. Sigh. Okay let's do this right for once.
Where did we stop at? Ignorance, yes. It's not about ignoring your life responsibilities; it's about ignoring destructive criticisms and direct insults. Build your defense system in a way that you can't be affected by mean comments that easily. It's going to take some time, years maybe. Me being the middle child, it takes extra effort to get recognized and to be taken seriously. It might be due to the fact that I've always been practicing Ninja skills in the house by climbing and swinging around, but that's not the point! Damn. Okay. Family members and relatives often focus on the elder child and the younger child. As the middle one, we'll always need to struggle to keep up with the expectation from the elder one and to also fight for attention with the younger one. Even if we're doing the same thing, people will always encourage and praise the other person and left me feeling dejected. So as time goes by, I learnt to not rely on other's compliment, and started to fight for myself. I chose to leave my hometown right after I graduate high school so I don't have to keep going through that dejected phase. That phase that made me feel unwanted and...okay this is not going well. I guess the topic of Criticism VS Witticism is only valid for the first three paragraphs. No, make it the first 2.2 paragraphs.
Sorry for the waste of your time reading this article. I guess I'm not able to finish writing on this topic on a serious note. I'll just stick to writing fictional stories on zombies and stuffs. A vampire story, maybe?
