Z World
I woke up with a start. My eyes darted around the room. It was impossible to make out anything in this darkness. I reached out for my wooden plank. It wasn't next to me. I got on my knees to search for it. Instead of the plank, I came in contact with a cold rough hand. I pulled back and stifled a scream. I grabbed something on my far left that felt like a carrot and waited for the attack. Nothing. I realized it was chilly in here. And it smelled like something rotted for a long time. Wait...Carrots and cold air. Am I in a walk in refrigerator?
Okay, chill. Not that I need to be any chiller now, but just stay calm. Think hard, what happened before I passed out? I was hungry, and I was running. I wanted to get away but I wanted that huge loaf of bread as well. There was no time; I had to escape from the diner. But it was too late. I retreated into the kitchen and shut a heavy door behind me. I tripped, and then everything went black.
I waited for my eyes to adjust to the darkness. Slowly I could make out the four walls, the steel racks and the boxes of supplies that were thrown on the floor. I shuffled backwards when I finally saw the owner of those hands. Dead, but definitely died as a human. There were no signs of struggle, which means he died from hypothermia. I'm safe for the mean time. I stood and analyzed my surrounding. Rotting dead body, check. Boxes of spoiled vegetable, check. Stale bread, check. Wormed meats, check.
The guy must have died days ago, because the temperature now is not cold enough to cause hypothermia. I guess the diner has a backup generator that kept the electricity running. I could feel the temperature rising as I continued to scout around, looking for edible nutrients and possibly new weapons for defense. I unscrewed a steel pole from its hinges and named it Arden. Hey you can't be picky with who or what you befriend with at situations like this. I need every support I can get right now. Jeez.
I stuffed some stale bread into the backpack that I 'borrowed' from the dead man. As I always said: Stale bread is better than nothing! I assume the doors are sound proofed as I wasn't able to make out if anyone was at the other side of the door. I had to risk it; I can't stay in here forever. I cracked the door open wide enough to have a peek. With the single red bean in my hand, I threw it onto the kitchen counter which made a soft clink. I waited. No movements, good. I slowly crept out of the chiller with Arden, looking left and right to make sure the coast is clear. I paused at every doorway to avoid any sudden confrontation with them.
After deciding that the streets are safe, I sprinted out of the diner and ran down two blocks in full speed. I dare not stop to catch my breath as it might be my last one. I have not figured out their attack patterns yet, but i will...soon. I headed towards my hiding place. It was situated at the second floor of the apartment at Street 31. I swung my door open and locked it tight behind me. I made sure the blinds of the windows are undamaged and the seals around them are still intact. Placing my backpack on the table, I proceeded to push the sofa to block the front door.
I slumped down my makeshift bed at the corner and took some deep breaths. I can't believe any of these is happening. What are those...people? Are they still human? I sat up and lighted the three candles on the floor. I then rummaged through the stack of old newspapers that I've grabbed at the apartment entrance. I hope there's something that might explain this commotion. The newspaper dated six days ago and the entire front page was reviewing the damages that were done by these...people. Or should I say creatures? Jackpot! Here it is. Written by Professor Langon; Virus Outbreak in the South. BT12...flu...sore eyes...hair loss...broken teeth...bad hearing...shriveled arms and legs. Hmm...seizure happened more often until they finally snapped. Great, those things are crazy.
It states there are zero survival rates from the disease, but they were able to slow down the outbreak. All the bodies were kept for further research in the army base of the South. The bodies came back to life after three days and the virus in them was found to be deadlier than before. Direct contact with the undead will cause infections, specifically for those who have exposed wounds on their body... That explains why so many of them are wearing army uniforms. The attack started with the army, and then it spread to the streets. Infections that were caused directly by the undead speeds up the changing process allowing the victim to transform completely in just one day.
Alright, I've got this. Zombies huh? Who knew? Now where did I keep the zombie survival kit that went viral online a few years ago when zombie movies were a big hit? Oh yeah, I don't have one because ZOMBIES AREN'T FREAKING REAL!!! It's supposed to be just fictions! What kind of stupid joke is this?!
I was so mesmerized in my own thoughts that I did not register the rhythmic soft thuds in the hallway. I stiffened when I heard a groan and quickly blew out the candles. I held on to Arden and prayed silently. It sounded like someone was dragging their feet and at the same time limping across the hallway. It seemed like forever when the sound finally faded away. It has never occurred to me if those things could climb the stairs up to my room. I decided to not sweat it and got ready for some rest, but something is certain: I won't be able to stay hidden in this room for long.
I took a long nap, maybe five to six hours, max. I can't get into deep sleep knowing that those creatures are lurking outside my room. I carefully lit one candle, getting just enough light so I could pack my stuff. I didn't have much, just two spare shirts and a khaki pants. I used some rope to tie on some wooden planks onto my arms and legs. Extra protection. I slowly moved the sofa from the door, and stood still for a good five minutes to listen to any movements. A lot went through my mind at this moment. Where was I supposed to go? Is there a safe place from these creatures? I wished I had an answer, but I don't. My best bet? The city hall. The government should be well aware of the situation before us, so they should have some defense proposal at their base.
Okay, the hallway sounds fine to me. Taking a deep breath, I swung opened the door and held up Arden like a baseball bat. Nothing came lunging at me; I peeked into the hallway and advanced to the stairs. So far so good. I crept down the stairs, trying my best to not make any creaking noise. I went to the front door and looked out to the streets. Empty, hmm. Well it's better than having the place overflowing with bloody creatures. It's now or never. I sprinted out and headed down the road towards the highway. The area I lived in is out of town. It usually takes 20 minutes' drive to reach the town central, and another 15 minutes to the city hall. Bad news, I don't have a car, nor do I know how to hot wire one.
I kept running until I'm out of breath, until my legs went numb, until all I could hear is how hard my heart is beating. I dare not stop, not until I'm out of this hell of a place. I reached the highway after 35 minutes of running. Black spots danced around my vision and it got worse when I looked up to the sky. I started to feel dizzy so I steadied myself with Arden and took a bite of the stale bread from yesterday. I looked behind me and felt grateful that nothing is after me. Maybe it's their rest time. I scanned the highway and saw a few vehicles abandoned along the road. Maybe, just maybe, some of them still have their keys in them.
I trotted towards the cars and hit them a few times with Arden. I had to make sure the creatures are not hiding in them. After a quick peek in the backseats and trunks, I checked to see if the car keys are still intact. Bingo! I guess nobody had time to take their keys with them when the creatures attacked. I tried to start the engines but most of them don't work. I gave up and prepared myself mentally to walk on foot for the rest of the journey. That's when I spotted Argus - the most beautiful tie-dyed van that seemed to be driven by a bunch of hippies before it hit the ramps. I tried to turn on the ignition a few times before it roared to life. I almost did a rain dance around the van until I realized the van isn't the only thing that roared. A pack of zombies, around seven of them are slowly approaching me from behind.
And what's even worse? They were accompanied by two dogs. Zombie dogs to be exact.
I jumped on board and slammed the accelerator. The highway was temporarily filled with black soot and I hoped the zombies had a serious case of asthma. I shot down the highway at 90km/h and headed straight towards the town central. As I sped across the highway, zombies can be seen slowly emerging from the woods into the highway. I kept the accelerator floored and hoped I could reach the town before the highway is filled with those creatures. I took a sharp turn to the left and entered the town limits. The town streets were harder to maneuver as there are even more abandoned vehicles along the way. I had to ramp pass a few cars in order to advance. The sky is getting dark; I can't risk being out here any longer.
The town is even more chaotic. Zombies are roaming the streets and entering houses like they owned them. Several tried to reach for my van but I swerved to avoid them. I kept my eyes on the petrol meter, hoping I could reach the city hall before the van conks out. I could see the roof of the city hall from a distance, another two turns and I'll be there! Suddenly a black figure ran across the street and stood in my way. It happened so fast I didn't even have a chance to blink. His desperate, teary face told me he's not a zombie so I hit the brakes. The car screeched to a stop just two inches from his face. He scrambled towards the passenger door but it was shut tight. We couldn't manage to force it open so he had to climb in from the car window. We steered off quickly just as the zombies closed in on us.
He was breathing heavily but managed to mutter thanks. He slumped down on the car seat but sat up straight quickly. 'We need to get to the city hall.' he said.
'Is it safe there?' Please say yes. Please say yes. My croaked voice surprised me, only then I realized that I've not spoken to anybody for days.
'Yes.' He answered. I almost scramed Hallelujah. 'The government set up a base camp over there. with high steel fences to fend off the zombies. But the zombies are constantly surrounding the area, it's hard to get in.'
'Okay. Is there any other way to get in? Maybe we could cause a distraction?' I said.
His eyes sparkled. 'Yeah...yeah! We could! Those things are sensitive to noises. If we could get something to make really loud noise somewhere further away, we could sneak in when the coast is clear!' He sounded excited at the idea. Even I was getting pumped up. Finally, a chance to survive. We arrived at the city hall, and as he said, it was surrounded by steel fences as tall as a two story building. The fences were reinforced with all sorts of junks and metals so it looked like it was two feet thick. It was hard to look into the vicinity but I was able to make out a few silhouettes behind the fence. With the obscured vision, I guess we aren't getting any help from the inside.
We circled the city hall and observed the zombie crowd around it. We're trying to look for an area that has a lesser density. But soon we realized that we are creating a commotion among the zombies. Instead of crowding outside the city hall, the zombies started to trail our van.
'I'll take the wheel.' He said.
'What? Why? What's the plan?' I asked.
'See that big tree back there?' I glanced back and saw a tree by the street that was at least four feet thick with tall branches that reach out to the steel fence.
'That's our best chance, I've been scouting around for a while; if we could climb up that tree, we could try to jump over the fence.' He explained.
'But that's going to be a hard fall.' I said.
'Like I said, that's our best chance.' He looked at me. We are circling halfway round the City Hall and we need to make a decision fast. 'Try to get the insider's attention as we climb, the zombies won't be able to follow us up that tree. Hopefully.' He urged.
'Okay.' I stammered. 'How can we pull it off?'
'The zombies are following our van; that makes the area around the tree clear of zombies for a while, I'm going to slow down when we reach the tree and you have to make a run for it.' He paused to let that thought sink in.
'What about you?' I asked.
'I will cause some distraction to divert their attention, and then I'll join you.' He said as if the plan is definitely going to work.
'Okay.' We switched seats as we are nearing our savior tree. I can't help but thinking about the effect of falling off that tree onto hard ground. But then, we didn't have other options. 'What's your name?' I asked after realizing we've not introduced ourselves yet.
'I'm John.'
'I'm Beth.'
'Nice to meet you, now get going. See you on the other side.' He said as I tried to wiggle out the car window as fast as I could. I managed to touch down the pavement feet first and ran towards the tree. Once there I quickly realized there isn't any foot hold to aid me up the tree. Suddenly there's a huge crash behind that resembles a vehicle ramming its way through rows of garbage cans. It must be John's distraction plan. I stepped a few feet back and ran with all my might towards the tree. I jumped hard on my last step and hurled myself up to the lowest branch.
I managed to pull myself up and sat panting on the trunk. John followed closely behind and nudged me to keep climbing, When we finally made it to the fence level, I glanced into the city hall perimeter and saw a scene that does not make sense. I stopped and tried to decipher what's going on. John kept pressing me to move forward. We slowly made our way to the branch nearest to the fence. 'John?' I hesitated at the tip of the branch and looked backwards at him.
'Sorry Beth.' He said.
'What?'
That's when he pushed me off the branch. I free fall into the perimeter of the city hall with my back towards the ground. Before I could snap back to reality, my body hit a massive block of metal scraps, hard. My head was hanging off the sides of the block. My vision went black for a second from the pain that came from my back spine, but when sight came back to me, I could see silhouettes of zombies and white cloaked persons roaming the field.
What am I seeing? Aren't the city hall supposed to be free from the infestation? Why are zombies and doctors mingling together?
I was't able to move. I couldn't even feel my legs. Just then, a man with grey hair strolled towards me with a clipboard on hand. Two more joined him as he got closer to me. 'Welcome to the party.' He said as he took out a syringe from his pocket and injected a blue liquid into my chest. I winced as I felt the strange sensation of my inner parts decaying instantly. He looked up above me and gave a thumbs up. 'Good job. We've got ourselves one more warrior to train.' He smiled and walked back towards the field. The two man behind dragged me off the block and proceeded to drag me across the field.
I looked down at my body and realized my skin was turning chalky white. Some parts are turning grey and my skin seems to be tearing away. I couldn't feel any pain from that, but I could definitely feel my life source fading away. Am I turning into a zombie? What...what do they mean by warrior? I couldn't think properly, it's like my brain is decaying as well. That's when I was dragged into the building. I see rows of life size test tubes being arranged neatly by the corridor. In each of the tubes contained an inactive zombie. Their eyes are closed, no signs of breathing, but their skin seemed to be glowing faintly. They dragged me towards the back end of the corridor and hoisted me into one of the empty tubes.
After sealing the tubes tight, they pumped in a greenish smoke from the only opening above my head. My eyelids felt heavier by the second. Before I passed out completely, I could make out the label of the tube that was laying beside me: Zombie Warrior 879. This...this isn't a virus breakout...this...is an evil war plan.
Okay, chill. Not that I need to be any chiller now, but just stay calm. Think hard, what happened before I passed out? I was hungry, and I was running.
