The Game PLan
I booked my Taipei bound flight to depart on 26th March, at 12.35am and I will be landing at TPE around 2.05am. The choice is between arriving at 2.05am or 8.30pm. I'd prefer to land in the midnight so that I don't have to waste one whole day.
From there, I will take a bus down to Taipei Main Station which will take approximately 1 hour. I shall check-in the hotel that I've pre-booked a day earlier so I can rest until 8-9 in the morning. Maybe I'll have some local breakfast before heading out for sight seeing, which I have yet to plan for.
The flight back to Macau was not confirmed yet because TigerAir have not published the schedule for flights after March 2016. I've planned to leave Taiwan from Kao Hsiung cause I am planning to travel down Taiwan from North to South. Hopefully it'll work out fine!
Updates on 22nd Nov 15:
After some thinking, it's best to just loiter around Taipei and TaiChung for a 6-days-trip. I should explore more on each area, rather than skipping through just so I can cover more ground. So for now, my plan will be focusing on Taipei and TaiChung.
Updates on 21st Feb 16:
I have booked my return ticket and accommodation in Taipei + Taichung. So here's the summary:
TigerAir Taiwan flight tickets HKD 1108.40
(2-way + one-way 20kg check in baggage + credit card processing fee) (SGD 200.31)
Taipei Accomodation 25/03 - 29/03 HKD 807.18
(Galaxy Mini Inn, Xi Men Ding) (SGD 145.87)
TaiChung Accommodation 29/03 - 31/03 HKD631.06
(Plaza Hotel, Central District) (SGD 108.68)
TOTAL HKD 2546.64
One of my colleagues will be travelling with me. She will be in Taipei from 23rd to 28th. So we'll be meeting up for 2 days only. My housemates wanted to join initially but they withdrew from the plan due to some last minute changes. I find it easier to plan the itinerary with a smaller group. This time round, my colleague will book for her own flights + accommodation and I booked mine separately. Travelling in groups is a headache, I mean, I can't make fast decisions. We have to get everyone's agreement before proceeding and to me, that's so tiring. From now on, SOLO trips only! Unless we're following a tour group.

The Journey
Day One 26/03/16
My flight was at 0035hrs on the 26th, and my shift ends at 0800hrs on the 25th. So I had plenty of time to pack my stuff before departing for Taiwan. I brought more stuffs with me this time, which totaled up to almost 9kg for my carry on luggage.
I departed from home around 9.30pm and took Bus 26 towards the Airport. It was my first ride on Bus 26 so I didn't know it was a small bus which made it difficult for me to manage my luggage in there. I arrived Macau Airport at 10pm and waited for the check-in counters to open. The check-in crew did not check my luggage weight even though they asked to place my luggage on the belt for the luggage tag. After the immigration, I headed to Plaza Premium Lounge at Lvl 2 for dinner.

After the immigration, I headed to Plaza Premium Lounge at Lvl 2 for dinner.
The flight was delayed again. Typical for Tiger Airways. So we took off around 0100hrs and landed in Taipei Taoyuan International Airport 桃园国际机场 at 0230hrs. I queued for immigration for about 30 minutes. After that, I followed the signboards and headed towards the Bus Station which was located one floor below the immigration. I researched earlier and bought supposedly the only midnight bus towards Taipei City - Kuo Kuang Bus 国光客运. The bus tickets doesn't have a specific time or seats, which I realized later that it was considered a back-up seat ticket 补位票, which means you go on the bus whenever there's available seats for you. So everybody obediently queued up at the bus lane in the freezing cold wind, hoping the bus will arrive quickly.
Fortunately, after waiting for 20 minutes or so, the bus arrived and I was beyond happy. I was given a luggage sticker before placing my luggage in the bus' luggage compartment. The bus seats were in a 2-1 arrangement, so there's 2 seats together on the right, and 1 solo seat on the left. I chose a solo seat and rode for 45 minutes-1 hour towards Taipei Bus/Train Station. Upon reaching the Bus Station, I took a taxi towards XiMenDing 西门町 for less than TWD 100.
My hotel - Galaxy Mini Inn has a 24 hrs reception. I booked for my room to arrive 1 day earlier, which is on the 25th of March so that I can get a room when I arrive in the midnight on the 26th.
People, that's what you're supposed to do if you know that your flight will arrive in the midnight. Book the room to be ready 1 day earlier and stop pestering the front desk personnel to give you a room early in the morning.
So after I checked-in to the room, I find it to be on a low maintenance side. The ceilings were dirty, and so are the walls. A few strands of hair are still on the floor. Plus I had to climb up 5 floors to reach my room. I guess I won't be opting for this mini hotel anymore for my next trip.

One thing that I liked though, was their power sockets. The sockets are international adaptors, and they were being installed upside down, which is a plus point because as you can see, my Samsung charger has the USB cable attached to the bottom part of the charger. So with the sockets being upside down, I don't have to bend my USB wire onto the table to fit into the sockets. Thumbs up for that!
This is how the hotel looks like in the day. The first picture was their main building, however my room was assigned in the next building as seen in the second picture.
I only slept for 2 hours and woke up at 7.30pm to prepare for the day. I met up with my colleague at 8.30am to visit JiuFen 九份, ShiFen 十分 and PingXi 平溪.
We followed the instructions given online and took the XiMen西门 MRT towards ZhongXiao FuXing 忠孝复兴 MRT station. After that, we looked for Bus 1062 that goes towards JiuFen. Along the way, there were a few taxi drivers asking if we'd like to pack a taxi together with 3 other passengers to go to JiuFen. We turned down a few cause it was quite pricey for us, it was TWD250 per person. But as we approach the bus stand, another taxi driver offered us TWD150 per person cause there's already 3 other passengers waiting to depart. So we agreed and rode for a good 30 minutes towards the destination.

We arrived early so the crowd was still acceptable. The first stall we stopped by was the Peanut + Ice Cream Roll at TWD40. After that we went for the FishBall Soup and Thick Fish-paste Soup at Ah Yun Traditional Noodle Shop 阿云传统切仔面店.
Having a hot bowl of soup after a chilly Ice Cream Roll in the cold wind was definitely the best experience. We continued walking along the street and grabbed more snacks on the way. We followed a signage pointing towards the Gold Museum, but it was closed, so we ditched that and went for more food.
We spotted one of the famous Taro Ball Soup stall - Grandma Lai's Taro Balls 赖阿婆芋圆 and decided to try it out. It has a few different colored taro balls with different flavors. We order 2 cold ones and seated ourselves at the dining area next to the stall.
After the taro balls, I spotted my first Stinky Tofu 臭豆腐 in Taipei! It's called 深坑臭豆腐, which translate literally to Deep Hole Stinky Tofu, but to me, it sounded more like Shit Hole Stinky Tofu. But it's really good, I like grilled tofu more than the deep fried ones.
We stopped eating for awhile and focused on sight seeing. The view was great cause JiuFen is situated on the hill. The scene is breathtaking when the ocean and hills are in the same picture.
We continued to look for food which landed us with another bowl of taro ball from another famous stall called Aunty Ah Gan's Taro Ball 九份阿柑姨芋圆. After purchasing the taro balls at the entrance, you'd have to venture inside the building to the dining area that features a wide view of the hills and ocean of JiuFen.
On the way back to JiuFen's entrance, I spotted grilled snails as features on some TV shows and blogs. I bought one portion to try. But it was too slimy for my liking, and it doesn't look clean as well. Other than that, we stopped by another famous stall that sells Fish Ball Soup and I wolfed down half a bowl of fish ball and stuffed tofu. Before leaving JiuFen, we stopped by another famous shop - MiShi Desserts 米诗堤甜点王国 that sells Puff. We chose the Taro Puff and it was awesome!
After JiuFen, we took a public bus towards RuiFang Train Station 瑞芳火车站 for the train towards PingXi and ShiFen. We stopped by PingXi first and the train ride was awful! It was so crowded and stuffy inside, plus the girl in front of me was standing way too close and I had to lean back to not sniff her hair YUCKS!
After a 1 hour train ride, we finally arrived at PingXi! Because we were full from eating too much in JiuFen, we didn't look for any food in particular in PingXi, but we did stop for some Onion Pratha 葱油饼 and PinBall Soda 弹珠汽水.
There were train tracks above the streets and trains passing through the streets as well. It was very exciting to witness these scenes that I've never seen in my own country.

After that, we randomly picked one stall to buy Sky Lanterns 天灯 so that we could write wishes on them. I read online that sky lanterns are not environmental friendly, cause the lanterns will fall at some point and will be left dangling in the woods for God knows how long. It was true cause on the way to and fro PingXi, I could see specks of reds and blues in the woods from afar. Anyway, we chose the 4 colored ones and each wrote half a side of each color.
Each color represents different meanings, you can check on them upon making the order. After releasing our sky lanterns, we head over to ShiFen 十分 by train again.
There are many people who chose to release sky lanterns in ShiFen as well. It was more flowery in ShiFen though. There are more memorial stamps here too. Remember to bring a blank note book in Taiwan cause they will always provide stamps for visitors to utilize at most attractions.
In ShiFen, we tried their Braised Pork Rice 噜肉饭 and their brown sugar milk with glass jelly and pearls 黑糖牛奶粉圆加仙草. The brown sugar milk was awesome no matter where you buy it from. From now on, I'll only have brown sugar milk drink from all boba stalls.

The scenery in JiuFen, PingXi and ShiFen was ten out of ten! They are so beautiful and breathtaking! I would love to visit again but the crowd kinda tips it off.
After that, we took a bus back towards the city. We visited RaoHe Night Market 饶河夜市 at SongShan 松山 MRT Station. The crowd was terrible! If you're in the same mental state as mine where you've only slept for 2 hours, you'll have a hard time there. People kept pushing around and I wanted to punch whoever that are pushing me. Both the stall vendors and visitors are rude, that made my day even worse. I don't even have the appetite to eat anymore.
Anyway, these are what I ate at RaoHe Night Market.

The crowd was getting really irritating so we went back to the hotel. I was exhausted too. We ended the night quite early around 10pm. We dropped by the hotel reception to purchase a Taiwan Travel SIM Card that offers unlimited data for my traveling convenience. I rely heavily on internet and Google Maps as I'm not familiar with the streets in Taiwan.
After that, I went back to shower and sleep whilst my colleague continued her shopping at XiMenDing.

Day Two 27/03/16
Because I rested early the day before, we didn't have time to plan for our second day. My colleague texted me that she'll wake up a bit later, hence I decided to head out by myself. I woke up at 8.30am to prepare for an early day out.
I first visited the Red House Theatre 西门红楼 which was located opposite my hotel. But it wasn't open yet as it was still early. I then took the MRT towards Long Shan MRT station to visit the Long Shan Temple 龙山寺.
I first visited the Red House Theatre 西门红楼 which was located opposite my hotel. But it wasn't open yet as it was still early. I then took the MRT towards Long Shan MRT station to visit the Long Shan Temple 龙山寺.
I wanted to look around the inner part of the temple, but it was too crowded with people holding joss sticks, so I just scanned the area and left. I went to hunt for breakfast nearby the temple and spotted Oyster Mee Sua. However it was sold out. Devastated, I went to 7-11 to buy sandwich and coffee. I love the 7-11s in Taiwan. I stood and watched the temple from the opposite side of the road while eating my breakfast.
After breakfast, I took the MRT towards Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall 中正纪念堂. My parents were in Taipei that day as well, I was waiting for their message or call on their location but we coincidentally bumped into each other at the memorial plaza. They were leaving soon at that time and their tour guide agreed to let me tag along their tour, but I have just arrived at the memorial plaza and their schedule doesn't really fit into mine. So we parted ways and agreed to meet up at XiMenDing at night.
The famous white archway stood facing the road with '自由广场' (Freedom Plaza) written on it. A huge white building with blue roof top was situated far behind it.
A pop-up event featuring the Disney's 'Frozen' was on-going. But the queue was so long that I decided not to join in. I climbed up the stairs towards the white building with the blue roof, and the changing of guards ceremony was in process. I wasn't able to watch clearly due to the massive crowd around them, but I was able to snap some pictures by holding my camera up high.

After that, I went to the Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall 国立国父纪念馆. There wasn't much to see though. Many youngsters were using the space and the reflections from the glass doors to practice dancing. There was a change of the guards ceremony going on inside the hall as well. But as usual, I was at the back of the crowd so I couldn't see anything.
Once I'm done looking around, I headed towards ZhongXiao FuXing MRT station for the Post Boxes that were bent by a strong wind that once hit Taiwan. I read online that tourists queued up to take pictures with the post boxes, so I was quite surprised when nobody was there. It was situated right in front of a 7-11.
When I'm done taking pictures and selfies with the post boxes, I took the MRT towards the Zoo station for MaoKong Gondola 猫空缆车. There was a super long queue for the gondola, and I waited for 30-40 minutes to get on the gondola.
There are 2 types of gondola at the same price, I chose the regular gondola on my way up, which means no see-through gondola floor.

There are 3 stops in total for the gondola trip, I'm heading towards the last stop which is the MaoKong stop which took around 30 minutes. You can use your MRT card for the entrance fee as well. The weather was so cold up there, I had to whisk out my scarf and gloves just to keep warm. But it's still not warm enough. So I ended up buying lots of hot food to keep myself warm HOHOHO!
I walked further down the road in search for a tea house to enjoy the mountain view. I searched online for some nice tea houses and found one that's overlooking the hillside. So I went in and ordered a tea set, Tea infused Fried Rice and Stir Fried Potato Leaves.
The tea set comes with a pot, a cup, biscuits and a jelly. The tea infused fried rice was quite nice and the potato leaves taste like home.

After the tea session, I walked towards the trail 樟树步道 as suggested on the map. It was so pretty with yellow flowers blooming in the field.
I headed back to the gondola cause I was getting tired. Unsurprisingly, the gondola queue was long as well. I opted for the Crystal gondola this time with the see through floor. It was pretty exciting to look at the top of the forest as we pass by.
I rushed to meet up with my colleague for dinner as she's treating for my birthday. My mum called when I was on the way and told me they're at XiMenDing and will be leaving in 20 minutes. I couldn't make it there that fast so I told them I might go and meet them at their hotel.
So I met up with Audrey at Eslite Bookstore 诚品书店 at DunNan Branch 敦南分店. We discussed where to eat but couldn't come up with a decision so we walked around the area to look for hotpot restaurants. We hit the gem and found a street full of hotpots and barbecues. We chose one finally and got seated comfortably at a sofa booth.
The best part of the hotpot restaurant is their unlimited serving of Cold Stone Ice Cream. We started by choosing the soup base - Spicy Mala 麻辣 and Pork Bone Broth 豚骨. We then placed order for the hotpot and barbecue items!

We were so full after dinner so we walked around the area for better digestion. We went back to XiMenDing area to look at the weekend night stalls but it was closed when we arrive. So we parted ways as my colleague is heading towards Watsons for more shopping before her flight back the next day. I then went into XiMenDing shopping area to catch a glimpse of the night crowd.
I wan't able to meet my parents as their accommodation is very far from town. Plus when I finished dinner it was already 10pm. I was upset for not being able to see them a little longer in Taiwan, cause I don't think I'll be going back home until I resign next year. But it's alright, I'm sure it'll work out in one way or another.

Day Three 28/03/16
My colleague left early in the morning, so from this day onward I'm all alone in Taiwan. I started this day early as well, and went to visit Martyr's Shrine for the changing of the guards ceremony. Unfortunately it was closed for rehearsals. So I could only peek through the entrance and saw the guards standing by for rehearsal.
I arrived at the shrine by taking a bus from the MRT station and the driver was very unfriendly. I'm not familiar with the bus fare systems in Taiwan. Apparently you have to watch out for the sign on top of the bus driver when you board the bus to see if you have to scan your bus card when you board OR disembark OR both. I didn't know about that at first. So I asked the bus driver when I board the bus. But all I got was total silence from him. How rude. Thumbs Down for Taipei.

Because of the rude encounter with that bus driver, I chose to walk back to the MRT station.
Along the way, a dog came out of no where and started following me. He was so hyper and kept running back and forth and was definitely getting high from rolling around the grass by the street. I was scared that he might attack me because he was way too hyper. He played around by himself but kept advancing with me. When we finally reach the MRT station, I stopped and looked at him, wondering if he would follow me into the station.
I walked over to the escalator and he started to follow me again. So I told him that he can't follow me into the station. He instantly turned back towards the street and stood there looking at me. I waved goodbye and went down the escalator, without him following me. Sigh. Dogs really are human's best friend huh? I'll miss you, tiger striped doggy.

I was indecisive of my travel plan for this day. I have too many places that I wanted to go in such a short time. So after the Martyr's Shrine, I decided to go to DanShui 淡水. I took the MRT towards the last station and it took around 1 hour. Before reaching, I searched online for places to go in DanShui, and planned to visit the Fisherman's Wharf, the Love Bridge, and also the Old Street of Dan Shui.
I was starving when I walked pass a stall selling Oyster Mee Sua along the Old Street, so I decided to try it out. The oysters seemed weird to me cause it's surrounded by a layer of milky substance. I thought it was the flour mixture that was used to make oyster omelette, so I didn't suspect much and ate all of it.

As I left the Oyster Mee Sua stall for the pier, my stomach started to hurt a little. It wasn't immense pain so I continued walking. I reached the pier and bought the sea bus ticket to go to the Fisherman's Wharf. I waited for 15 minutes inside the boat for other passengers to board. I started feeling queasy so I closed my eyes to avoid feeling sick. The ride took 15 minutes. I tried my best to ignore the urge to puke and focused on steady things such as the mountains. But I couldn't take it any longer. I whipped out my recyclable bag from my backpack and puked into it.
Once we arrived at the wharf, I immediately went to the washroom to clean myself. I thought it's just sea sick but I felt my stomach churning and I rushed into the toilet cubicle. I had a bad diarrhea and I was just hoping it's a mild food poisoning and it'll be over after that.

I walked along the pier towards the Love Bridge. I had to walk slowly to ease my stomach. The ocean is really beautiful with white waves crashing onto the rocky beaches. It's just like in the movies. It made me feel relaxed and calm. The place is so beautiful that I had to take more selfies. The wind was so strong that I constantly got whipped on the face by my own hair.
I bought a few packets of brown-sugar-ginger instant beverage and went to look for the bus station. I didn't want to take the sea bus back, even though I have bought the return ticket. I really don't want to feel sick again. The bus took 15 minutes to reach Dan Shui MRT station.
My next destination is Taipei 101, so I had to take a very long MRT ride from one end to the other, in which I dozed off during the journey. I was holding a huge plastic bag with the 4 big packets of gingery beverage I bought in DanShui. I spotted lockers on my way out of the Taipei 101 MRT station, so I inserted a TWD10 coin and kept my shopping bags in there. The locker system will issue a ticket with the password needed to retrieve your stuff.
Ding Tai Fung 鼎泰丰 was the first restaurant that came in view. I took the escalator up to the main street for a better look at Taipei 101.

There were a lot of tour buses coming in, so I quickly searched for the ticketing counter of Taipei 101's Observatory. It was situated inside the mall, on the 5th floor. There was no queue at the ticketing counter, so I bought the ticket in no time! It costs TWD500 per person.
There will be an entry number on the ticket, and a horizontal screen can be seen hanging next to the Entrance of the Observatory (which is a set of elevators). That horizontal screen will display the range of entry numbers that are allowed to go in at that point of time.
When your range of number is displayed, head towards the queue for the elevators. A staff will be stationed at the end of the queue to punch a hole to your ticket. You will then join the queue to enter the elevators.

The elevator was super fast and we reached level 88 in just 35 seconds! Lucky for me, the observatory isn't as packed as I expect it to be. I still had space to run around taking pictures. I eavesdropped on the tour guides' explanation and went around as told! Free tour!
Visitors can also walk up to Level 89 and 91. Level 91 is an open-air observatory that is guarded by a security personnel in case anyone tries anything bizarre. The wind was strong that day so only half of the open-air observatory was opened for visiting.
Level 89 is more like a display level that features the Damper Ball that stabilize the tower in case of earthquakes and strong winds. Level 89 also displays a variety of corals and jewelries.
I exited the Observatory from Level 89 where I had to queue again to take the elevator. I headed straight towards Ding Tai Feng, hoping that the queue will not be too long. It was 3pm+, so there aren't many people waiting at the entrance. I approached the counter to get a queue number for 1 person. I was given an ordering chit to select my meal while waiting.
Ding Tai Feng placed a stand at the entrance to inform customers on the dishes that were sold out at that point of time. You will have to keep track of your queue number on the screen above the counter. I only waited for 15 minutes for my number to be displayed. I guess it's faster to dine in small groups.

I've decided on my dishes while I was waiting for my turn, so I placed the order once I was seated. The server was kind enough to advise that I might have over-ordered for 1 person, so I cancelled the Shrimp Siu Mai and kept my 2 portions of Xiao Long Bao (Soup Dumplings), Dried Noodles and WanTon Soup. After they've taken your order, they will serve tea to you. So it isn't necessary to order extra beverages. My dishes was served relatively fast, less than 7 minutes I guess.
The Xiao Long Baos are the BEST XLB I've had! Don't compare other XLB with the ones in Ding Tai Feng! I don't always get impressed by food, but when I do, you have to believe that it's really good! When you first bite into it, the only thing you can say is 'Mmmm'. Nothing can describe how good it is. It's just awesome! From now on, I'll only have XLB from Ding Tai Feng!
After a fulfilling tea session of my darling XLB, I went back to my hotel to rest and freshen up.
I head out again for Ah Zong Mian Xian 阿宗面线 at XiMenDing. It has really good reviews and I just had to try it! I wasn't so eager though, especially after what happened to me after the mee sua in the morning. But still, I don't wanna regret not trying this out.
I queued at the cashiering counter and placed my order. I only bought a small bowl but I still couldn't finish it. After paying, you will receive your order at the cooking station. They provide 3 types of sauces: Vinegar, Garlic and Chili. I added a bit of each for max satisfaction.
There are no tables or chairs, so everyone held their bowl of mee sua and started slurping by the roadside. Trash bins are located right outside the stall for customers to stack their empty bowls neatly in it. There's a pail with a strainer for leftovers dedicated for those (a.k.a. me) who can't finish their mee sua.

After the mee sua, I walked around XiMenDing again and after that, headed towards RaoHe Night Market to visit the Rainbow Bridge nearby. It was a disappointment because the bridge wasn't lit at all, nor is it in rainbow colors. So I walked back to the night market and queued for the Pork Pepper buns that I didn't try during my visit on the first day. I finally got my hands on the buns after 20 minutes of queuing and I bought a brown sugar milk beverage as well.
I ate while walking towards Wu Fen Pu 五分埔 shopping district, hoping to be able to find a long skirt that I wanted. However, every shop was just busy packing and unpacking their stocks, some shops that I went into wasn't friendly either, which made me lose my mood to shop. That's why I like shopping malls and chain stores more than local stores: I don't have to see unhappy staffs mingling around, looking at you as if you don't have money to pay.
I started feeling dizzy and unwell that I decided to head back to my hotel. On the way back by MRT, I had a strong urge to puke. So I stopped by the next station and rushed to the toilet. My stomach was churning very badly as well. Once I'm in the toilet cubicle, I threw open the lid of the trash can and puked my heart out. I was having diarrhea very badly as well. I continued puking until I was left with no energy and an empty stomach. After 15 minutes of resting in the cubicle, I finally had the energy to stand and walk back to the train platform. However after a few stops, I couldn't take it anymore and rushed to the next stop's toilet and repeat the same thing again.
I made it back to my hotel with much difficulty and asked for directions to the nearest clinic. But apparently all clinics in Taipei closes early. So the staff gave me directions to the nearest hospital. Since it's quite near to my hotel, I decided to walk over. Unfortunately, the hospital isn't located at the place shown by the staff. I was too weak to wander aimlessly anymore so I grabbed a taxi and asked him to take me to the nearest hospital.
Once there, I had to stand and wait for 15 minutes just to register. I swear I almost died. After FINALLY registering myself with the rude nurse who's asking me nonsense questions like why I don't have my Chinese name on my passport (Sue my country lah!), I sat down and waited for a good ONE hour before it's FINALLY my turn!
I was expecting to get some dripping done, but the doctor asked if I'd like to get a shot and some medication. So I got the injection and went home with my medicine before 12am. I felt much better after the shot and decided to walk back home since it's just a 10 minutes walk away. I bought mineral water and some light snacks at 7-11 along the way. I slept soundly once I'm back at the hotel and had my medication.

Day Four 29/03/16
IT'S MY BIRTHDAY!!! I allowed myself to sleep in, hoping that I will be in a better condition. But I suddenly recalled that I need to get more NTD before moving on to TaiChung, so I quickly got dressed by 10.30am and rushed out. I went to Taipei Power Station MRT cause my colleague said the rates are good over there. But I looked around but couldn't locate the currency exchange booths, so I went to a bank and made the transaction there. The rate in the bank was good too, it was at 4.14 for HKD.
My hotel's check-out time was 12pm, so I rushed back to XiMenDing for lunch. I've been dreaming to dine at Cali Burger, which was brought in to Taipei from Canada by singer Fish Leung's husband. I've chosen what I wanted to try before even leaving for Taiwan.
The place is located very near to the XiMen MRT Exit 6. Just go right after the exit and you will see CaliBurger on your right hand side. It's on the upper level of the shop houses. Once you got up the stairs, you'll immediately see the ordering counter and menu. The place was empty when I arrive, so I kinda had the whole place for myself. I placed my order and took a seat by the window

The burgers were made upon order so the preparation will take longer than the usual fast food joints. They provide wireless charging services on their tables as well. Your number will be called out when your food is ready. I ordered the Cali Burger and upgraded my fries to WildStyle Fries and also upgraded my drinks to a Strawberry Smoothie.
It was a very fulfilling lunch and I couldn't finish the fries. My stomach was still not very well, but I know I will definitely regret it if I did not try CaliBurger before I leave Taipei. After lunch I rushed back to my hotel. I've done packing in the morning, so I rested a while before the receptionist calls at 12.30pm to chase me out. It was a torture carrying my luggage down the infinite flight of stairs.
I took the MRT towards Taipei Train Station and bought a ticket towards TaiChung. I bought the ticket from the automated machines. You can choose to purchase reserved seats or non-reserved seats (which means your seat is based on first come first serve basis). To be on the safe side, I bought the reserved seats at TWD700. I followed the timings on the signboard and headed towards platform 2A as stated. The train has arrived but the staffs were in the midst of cleaning the cabins. I waited for 15 minutes before we were allowed to enter.

However, I did a mistake. There are two types of trains: the Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) 高铁 and the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) 台铁. My TaiChung hotel is near to the TRA station, but I bought the THSR's ticket instead.
The THSR's Taichung station is at the same location as the TRA's XinWuRi station (one stop before TRA's Taichung station), so I just have to change trains at THSR's Taichung station (a.k.a TRA's XinWuRi) to go to TRA's Taichung station.
I reached THSR's Taichung station at the exact time that was stated on the ticket. After exiting THSR's platform, I followed the signboards towards TRA's XinWuRi Station which is located in the same building. The building was really nice, it's not how I imagined a train station would look like. It looked more like a shopping mall.

I waited 15 minutes for the TRA because I was waiting at the wrong side of the track HAHAHA so stupid of me.

After a 8 minutes ride, I finally arrived at the correct Taichung station! I spotted the Kuo Kuang bus depot right next to the train station, so I entered and checked on the schedule towards Taipei Taoyuan International Airport.
My hotel was just a 2 minutes walk away. It was almost 3pm and my room was ready for check-in. I loved the room! It was a proper hotel room unlike the Inn that I stayed in at Taipei. They have a laundry room at the basement, which is the main reason why I chose this hotel. The place was clean and comfortable, but I just can't help feeling eerie in the room. I'm not sure why, but I'm not keen to find out or think too much! The room comes with a small chiller, which was perfect cause I've planned to get a cake for myself in the evening! My room package comes with breakfast, so I received 2 breakfast vouchers for my 2 days with the hotel.
I did not plan anything for Taichung yet, so I stayed in the hotel room and sketched up a plan. I left my hotel around 5pm and headed towards the U.Bike rental spot right opposite the train station. There are more bicycles available for rent as compared to KaoHsiung. I used my bank card to guarantee and pay for the bicycle rental.
I cycled towards Confucius Temple and Martyr's Shrine. It does not look too far away from my hotel, but I had too much confidence in my energy level. I was out of breath within 5 minutes of cycling. I guess I took my food poisoning too lightly. It must have seeped all my energy away. Sigh. Nevertheless, I made it to the temple and fortunately there's a same U.Bike rental system in front of the temple. I immediately returned the bicycle because I really don't have the energy to cycle back. Unfortunately, both the shrine and the temple were already closed when I arrive. Apparently they close at 4pm and 5pm respectively.
I took the bus back towards the train station and changed buses to go to the Animation Mural Street 动漫彩绘巷. I was worried because the waiting time for the bus was long and the sky was getting darker. Finally the bus came and it took 20 minutes to reach my destination. Because there's no MRT in Taichung, I had to rely completely on buses as the attractions are all far apart. But don't worry, you can use Google Map to search for the bus numbers to take and which stop to get off.
I looked forward to seeing One Piece drawings, cause those are the things that attracts me to this mural street. But I couldn't find the One Piece drawings anywhere. I was running around looking for them because the sky was already getting darker. I searched for the One Piece mural locations online and compared the pictures to the mural walls, I realized they must have been painted over with new animation characters. Well that's a bummer!

My next plan was to visit the Maple Garden 秋红谷 before the sun fully sets because online reviews state that the garden was beautiful both during the day and night. But I waited nearly 40 minutes for the bus to arrive. By that time, the sky was already dark. So I figured that maybe I could go to Feng Jia Night Market 逢甲夜市. But then I might not have enough time to buy my chocolate cake.
I decided to leave the night market for the next day and go straight for the chocolate shop. I had to walk for another 15 minutes towards the cake shop after alighting the bus. My mum texted me to get a good dinner for my birthday which made me realize I did not have any plans for my birthday dinner! I was so obsessed with the cake that I completely forgotten about dinner! I spotted a restaurant specializing in Japanese curry dishes along the way. So I decided to try it out after reviewing its comments online.
I was seated at a crowded dining area. Right smack at the center of the crowded dining area. I wanted to order a la carte but only set meals are available for dinner. I had no choice but to go for the set meal that offers way too many dishes for my appetite. I have to save some tummy space for my chocolate cake DUDE! But it's okay, I'll make it work. I ordered the Pork cutlet with curry rice. It came with an appetizer. a drink and a dessert. The appetizer features the all famous shredded cabbage salad that every pork cutlet restaurant serves, together with a crab and fruit salad. I chose the black sesame ice cream and orange slurpee kind-of drink for dessert.

After the meal, I paid at the cashier and went to the washroom. The change of my bill was placed in an envelope and I was holding it when I enter the washroom. I placed the envelope of money next to the toilet seat and made a mental note to take it with me when I exit. But only when I was getting ready for bed in the hotel that I remembered about the money. Damn it! There's about TWD600 in there! I could buy so much more food with that! Jeez babe! Arghh!
After dinner, I continued walking towards the cake shop. It was located in a mall called Park Lane 勤美绿园道. But it didn't state which floor it's situated on the website, and there's no directory in the mall. I ended up going up and down looking for the store for a good 20 minutes. I then exited the mall and walked towards the stores facing the street and I finally found it.
I planned to get a small sized cake, but apparently you have to order it in advance. I had no choice but to get the 6 inch Classic Chocolate Cake. I took the bus back to the hotel, waited for my tummy to make some space before eating it. It tasted so good.

It wasn't my best day to date. But I enjoyed my birthday this year. Getting to tour Taiwan by myself has always been at the top of my Must-Do-List. And I get to do it with the person I loved the most - Me!
Day Five 30/03/16
I woke up at 6.30am to get ready. I left my room for breakfast at 7.15am. The hotel's breakfast was situated on the second floor. I took my water bottle with me to refill it at the basement. After giving the restaurant host my breakfast voucher, I placed my stuffs on a table overlooking the street and picked my breakfast items from the buffet spread.
After refilling my water bottle at the basement, I went back to my room to plan my itinerary. My journey was packed with so many places that I'd like to visit. I've decided to start with the 立体龙猫公车站, which is a cute bus stand featuring the animation of Totoro. It was the nearest attraction from my hotel, and I took a bus over from the train station. The Totoro bus stand was right at the beginning of a small street branched off from the main road.
Next, I took a bus back to the train station, and changed to another bus going towards the Feng Le Sculptures Garden 丰乐雕塑公园. On the way to the garden, I realized there's a Chun Shui Tang 春水堂 branch nearby. Chun Shui Tang was the original inventor of the almighty bubble milk tea, so I have to try one! Their milk tea was quite pricey at TWD120 for a chilled large one. The pearls are smaller and chewy in texture. The milk tea was alright I guess.
In order to not waste time, I bought my milk tea as take-away and walked towards the sculpture garden. There are ducks/geese at the garden, I'm not sure which is which as they are all quite large in size. I stayed away from them cause I don't want to be chased by them.
Next, I took another bus to Maple Garden 秋红谷. I wasn't expecting to see cherry blossoms. So I was surprised to see a small trail of the Maple Garden flanked with cherry blossom trees!
The sun was up high, but I did not apply sunscreen before leaving my hotel. Damn it, the hottest day of my trip and I forgot about sunscreen.

After the Maple Garden, I went to DongHai University 东海大学 for the highlight of my trip - Luce Memorial Chapel 路思易教堂. It looked really pretty in the pictures and its architectural design was so unique. I entered the university and walked straight for 10 minutes until I arrive at the school canteen. The almighty chapel sits right opposite the school canteen!
There are people taking pictures with the chapel so I had to scoot around them to not appear in their pictures. How thoughtful of me!

After that, I sat by the university entrance to plan my next move and I decided to visit more village murals. So I took the bus towards ShaLu 沙鹿 to visit the Mei Ren Li Mural Village 美仁里彩绘村. I took 1 hour changing buses to reach the destination.
Once I'm done touring the murals, I walked to Sha Lu Train Station to take the train back to Xin Wu Ri Train Station. One thing that I did not take into consideration before hand was the train schedule. The next train towards Xin Wu Ri was an hour away! And I only realize that when I'm already at the train platform. So I was stuck at the train station for one whole hour waiting for the train! I was upset with my poor planning cause I could've saved more time by doing proper research. But it's okay, as long as I could reach my destination safe and sound, I will make do with it.
Once I arrive at Xin Wu Ri, I stopped by Mos Burger for lunch and also to take my medication. I ordered a simple a la carte burger and sat by the window. The bus towards my next attraction - Rainbow Village 彩虹眷村 will not arrive for the next 20 minutes, so I had time to relax.

I went to the bus hub underneath the train station after my simple lunch. But I couldn't locate the bus stand for Bus 70 that I was waiting for. I ran around the place, worried cause I'd need to wait for one more hour if I miss that bus. I ran up and down, in and out just to search for Bus 70! Finally when I was about to give up, I spotted the bus coming to a stop by the roadside to pick up passengers. So I ran with all my might and finally caught up to that bus! WOOHOO! Hooray for me!
The bus ride was 15 minutes. I had to walk along a street before reaching Rainbow Village. It was so crowded! Tour buses were lining the street and people are all over the place taking pictures.

Okay, something happened while I was waiting for the bus to go back to the train station. I have always told myself to live with no regrets. But I regretted my next action so much.
I was waiting for the bus to go to Xin Wu Ri train station. And the next bus was scheduled to arrive in one hour's time. A car stopped by the bus stop and asked me for directions to the train station. I wasn't sure but I told him it should be down the road cause that's where the bus came from earlier. He asked if I'm going to the train station as well and if I wanted to follow him over. I rejected and said I'll wait for the bus.
After he left, I was very proud of myself for the wise decision of not following a strangers' car. 30 minutes of waiting later, I was exhausted and told myself that I should have taken the stranger's offer to the train station earlier. I pushed that thought away and reminded myself that it's dangerous to do so.
Another 5 minutes or so, the same guy that was asking for directions earlier came back with a different car and stopped to thank me for the directions. I just smiled and said it's okay. He asked if I'm still waiting for the bus and if I wanted him to fetch me to the train station. At that point, I did not know what came across my mind because I actually agreed!
I hopped into the car and instantly felt afraid for my rushed decision. I held on to my backpack and kept the conversation going. He asked if I'm heading to Taipei or KaoHsiung. I told him that I'm going back to Taichung train station. He then said he'd fetch me directly towards TaiChung train station and he immediately turned the car around.
Along the way, I kept my eyes on the signboards to make sure he wasn't driving me elsewhere. He acted normally but he kept mentioning that I looked like a girl whom he used to like, and that really crept me out. He also stopped by Jun Mei 俊美 Pineapple Tart for me to buy some souvenir. After a 30 minutes drive, I could finally see the road sign pointing towards TaiChung train station.
Out of nowhere, he asked if we could take a picture together. I felt rude to say no cause he did drive me all the way back to TaiChung train station. I mean, a picture wouldn't do any harm right? He asked if we could lean closer for the picture. I smiled but I did not inch closer to him. Then he tried putting his arm around me. That's when I moved away from him and rejected the gesture. It's like...what a freak!
I finally got off the car and I was silently cursing myself for going through all those mess. I Whatsapp-ed my friends in Singapore to express how terrified I was. I didn't go straight back to my hotel as I was afraid that he might be stalking me. So I wandered around the area, going in and out of different shops and once I made sure he's not around, I rushed back to my hotel.
Once I was safely back in my room, I recalled 2 cases of maiming in Taiwan that happened just 2 days ago. Gosh what was I thinking? Riding with a stranger? I was so afraid that I might be placed under some spell, or even black magic! Or maybe he would just flash our pictures and tell people that I'm his girlfriend.
So I told my housemates that if I started dating a middle aged man, please slap the hell out of me and do whatever they can to stop me! I just can't get over how ignorant I was!
But at least I'm safe now. That's what matters.
For dinner, I took a bus towards Feng Jia Night Market 逢甲夜市. I did some research to see what's worth trying. I arrived after a 30-40 minutes bus ride and immediately went looking for Poya 宝雅. Poya resembles Daiso, but Poya features a lot of Taiwan beauty products. I previously bought my 3M double eye lid stickers from Poya. I couldn't find the 3M stickers in Macau so I need to buy more in Taiwan.
Once I have located Poya, I started looking for food at the night market. I knew that I was gonna buy heaps of products from Poya. I don't want to drag multiple bags with me while I eat, so I went for dinner first.
I scouted the place before I start queuing up for food. As usual, my first meal was stinky tofu. But this one was different: the stinky tofu was infused with black tea 红茶臭豆腐. It was less stinkier than the normal ones, with a slight hint of tea. Professor Du's Korean Fried Chicken 都欧巴.来自星星的你炸鸡 was right next to the stinky tofu. I thought the chicken pieces were boneless, but they were fried bone-in and then coated in Korean sauce. It was really good.

After that, I bought a well-known papaya milk that was featured on TV and also diced beef cubes that was grilled over flames. The papaya milk was nice, so were all the papaya milks in Taiwan. But the beef cubes were served in a small portion and they were too chewy. The beef cubes were not worth the price.
Once I was done with dinner, I went to Cosmed to buy Dr. Wu beauty products and masks. After that, I went to Poya to buy more beauty products and eye lid stickers! I bought 25 packs of double eye lid stickers. One packet contains 30 pairs of eye lid stickers.
After that, I went back to my hotel.
Before I call it a day, I bought a bus ticket towards Taipei TaoYuan International Airport from Kuo Kuang bus depot. I also arranged late check-out at 3pm with an extra charge of TWD450. The late check-out charge was worth spending as my bus will only depart at 4.10pm.

Day Six 31/03/16
It was my last day in Taiwan and I dedicated this day for shopping and shopping only. I woke up at 6.30am to freshen up and went for breakfast at 7.15am.
It was getting hotter in Taiwan, so I was sweating a lot. I walked towards Ah Ming Shi Biscuit shop 阿明师太阳饼 which was a 10 minutes walk away from my hotel. I bought a box of TaiYang Biscuit, a box of Pineapple Tart and a box of 3Q Biscuit which was really good when I taste-tested it.
Ah Ming Shi was known to be the inventor of Taichung's famous TaiYang Biscuit which translates literally to Sun Biscuits.

After that, I walked towards the other side of the building for a famous sandwich shop - Hong Rui Zhen 洪瑞珍 which was recommended by my friend. They sell their sandwiches individually, but you can also buy it in a box of 12 (4 flavors) or 16 (8 flavors). I bought one individual ham, egg & cheese sandwich and also one box of 12 sandwiches to bring back to Macau.
It was just a simple sandwich, but I like the sauce/dressing that they spread onto the sandwiches.

After buying the sandwiches, I head over to Miyahara 宫原眼科 to buy more souvenirs. They do sell ice cream as well and the queue for the ice cream was so long. People was just standing and eating their ice cream along the corridor. My tummy was still full and I was carrying two big plastic bags of heavy biscuits, so it was inconvenient for me to stand and eat.
I entered Miyahara's biscuit shop and was awe struck by their interior decoration.

I ended up buying TWD1800 worth of biscuits. The packaging was so pretty and the price wasn't that high. I bought their TaiYang Biscuits / Sun Biscuits 太阳饼 as well. Their Sun Biscuits was made with Longan Honey and it was really good. I wish I bought another box of that!
I was so glad that I brought my foldable duffle bag. Both my wheeled luggage and duffle bag were stuffed with my loots. I wanted to get a long skirt and also a nice, long sweater, so I Googled and found out about Yi Zhong Street 一中商街 that was located near the National Taichung University of Science and Technology 台中科技大学.
I was very happy to find the street crowded with food stalls and local fashion outlets. I started eating and shopping again. I even bought a sweater and a Minion-styled shorts with two straps over the shoulders.

I went back to the hotel once I'm done with Yi Zhong Street, and I still had 1 hour to spare. I showered and prepared the instant noodle that I bought this morning. I bought the same brand as I did last time, but with a different flavor. I also bought soft boiled eggs and latte.
I weighed my luggage at the hotel reception and it reads 20.9kg. I was hoping that the airline wouldn't mind about that extra 1kg. I then went to Kuo Kuang Bus Station to wait for my 4.10pm bus.
I was worried because there was a slight traffic jam on the way to the airport and my flight was scheduled to depart at 8.25pm. Fortunately, we arrived the airport by 6.30pm and I rushed for check-in. The counter crew didn't say anything about my extra 1kg, phew! I went through immigration and then to the Plaza Premium Lounge for dinner.
I had to rush to board the flight because I was expecting a delay. But TigerAir commenced boarding right on time! So I brisk walked/ran towards the gate and made it on board!

My After Thoughts
My trip in Northern Taiwan wasn't as smooth as I expected it to be. I spaced out most of the time. I would be standing right in front of the place that I was looking for, but still fail to see it. I didn't plan my itinerary properly even though I had 6 months to do it. But I'm a firm believer that things will always work out in the end.
I would like to apologize for not providing detailed information such as the bus numbers that I took and so on, because I can't recall them. Was this a side effect of working night shifts permanently? A weak memory?
I would like to thank ChungHwa Telcom for providing a stable unlimited data at an affordable rate. And most importantly: Google and Google Maps for providing accurate information on the attractions, especially which buses to take.
I planned to visit Taiwan again next year to witness the cherry blossoms in Alisan 阿里山. But it's not a solid plan yet. I've used up my 2016 annual leaves for Singapore and Korea at the end of this year, which I'm looking forward to very much.
