Decision
It was a last minute decision to go Tainan and KaoHsiung.
Initially I applied 2 annual leaves to go to Hong Kong. But my manager combined my 2 weeks' worth of rest days together with my 2 annual leaves, so in total I have 6 days off!
Once I received the confirmed schedule, I immediately booked for flight tickets to/from KaoHsiung.
I did not have any plans yet.
No accommodation, no places to visit, no packing, no preparations.
I purchased the tickets just 3 days before the departure date. Surprisingly the rates were not too high.
After some consideration, I've decided to visit Tainan first, and then KaoHsiung.
I booked my accommodation through Agoda, which offers reasonable rates considering that it's a very last minute booking.
TigerAir Taiwan flight tickets HKD 1025
(2-way + one-way 15kg check in baggage + credit card processing fee) (SGD 185.30)
Tainan Accomodation 28/11 - 30/11 HKD 792.52
(C.H. B&B 巧家民宿) (SGD 143.27)
KaoHsiung Accommodation 30/11 - 03/12 HKD 1083.04
(FX Inn KaoHsiung ZhongHua Road Branch 富驿商旅高雄中华路馆) (SGD 195.79)
TOTAL HKD 2900.56
That's the amount I spent before leaving for Taiwan.
Prior to my flight, I got myself a new neck pillow, selfie stick and water bottle for the journey.

The Journey
Day One 28/11/15
My flight is at 9.10am. My work ended at 1.30am. I wanted to spend the night up planning for my journey in Taiwan. However, I got too tired and slept for 2 hours before leaving for the airport. I packed briefly for the 6 days trip, minimizing the supplies that I bring along so that I could maximize space for the souvenirs I planned to buy.
I left home at 6am and walked over to Senado Square, hoping to catch a cab in time. I was lucky enough to be able to get on a cab immediately after taking a picture of the Christmas Tree at Senado.
I had breakfast at the Airport Lounge and waited for the 30 minutes flight delay.

I had breakfast at the Airport Lounge and waited for the 30 minutes flight delay.
After 1.5 hours of flight time, I arrived KaoHsiung International Airport at 11am. I fill in the arrival card whilst queuing for immigration check to save time. Right after I am done with immigration, I went to the currency exchange kiosk to get some New Taiwan Dollars (NTD). The currency rate at the point of my transaction was 4.03. I exchanged HKD2000 which got me NTD 8030. I then applied for an unlimited SIM data package at a telco booth nearby. I opted for the 大哥大 package which costs NTD500 for 7-days unlimited data.
Once done, I took the light railway 捷运 from KaoHsiung International Airport Station 高雄国际机场to KaoHsiung Main Station 高雄车站. I then walked over to the train station 火车站 and bought a train ticket over to Tainan. It costs NTD106.

It only took 30 minutes of train ride to reach Tainan. I chose to walk from Tainan station to C.H. B&B because it's only 2 straight roads away as shown on Google Maps. However, it took me almost 1 hour of walking to reach the place. The B&B is 'hidden' as no signboards were available to direct you there. Turns out, it's situated inside a brick building right behind a cosmetic clinic. Plus, the door is controlled electronically so it can only be opened with the key given by the B&B Reception. I called the B&B and a girl came down to get me.
The room was not ready, so I left my luggage with the B&B and went out for a walk. I wandered into a street opposite my B&B and ended up having 便便烧 (poop shaped cakes) with a ham & cheese filling as my first meal in Taiwan. Followed by 面线糊 which resembles Loh Mee back in Penang.
After that I went to 民生路 to look for a shop that sells Pau 名牌包子 that was featured in 爱玩客.
I ordered 2 types of pau, the classic 名牌包 and the Chicken Stinky Tofu Pau 臭鸡包. I fancy the classic pau as it's super juicy and it spilled all over my hands when I bite into it. But I'm not a fan of the chicken + stinky tofu combo, it tastes weird to me. It made me question my love towards stinky tofu. Each type of pau was assigned a different number, which can be referred to on their menu.
After the excessive eating, I walked over to Chihkan Tower 赤坎楼 for a visit. It requires an admission fee of NTD50. I was hesitant to use the selfie stick as I recalled of an article that announces the banning of selfie sticks at some attractions. I scanned around and pulled out my selfie stick when I saw someone else using it as well.
After Chihkan Tower, I went for a manicure session to salvage my manicure which was chipped and dirty. I requested for a classic French Manicure again, as it looks simple and I love simplicity. Plus, my work place accepts it. The manicurist informed that instead of getting the classic white French tip, I could opt for other colors. Hence, I chose light pink and the manicure costs NTD1300.
After the manicure, I headed towards WuSheng Night Market 武圣夜市. I was so excited! After years of dreaming about Taiwan Night Markets, I could finally experience it. It took me approximately 45 minutes to walk over, and by the time I reach the night market, I was starving! But I decided to roam around before deciding on my very first night market snack.
I chose the almighty Stinky Tofu which I haven't had in ages as my first night market snack. I ate the grilled version first, and then the deep fried version from another stall. Besides that, I bought deep fried crabs and Champagne Grape flavored ice cream as well. I guess I was too hungry that I could not eat much that night.

After the night market, I walked back to my B&B at a slow pace. Along the way, I bought 2 rice rolls from 7-11: Tuna and Pork. I once read that the best way to experience local's culture is to visit their 7-11 outlets. I guess it's true!
I started sketching my plan for Day Two once I'm back at my B&B. I wasn't able to use my phone charger as I did not bring an adaptor, nor did I realize that Taiwan uses 2-pin plugs. I ended up charging my phone from the TV's USB outlet.

Selfie Time~!
Day Two 29/11/15
I woke up at 5.45am as I've planned to explore further into the other areas of Tainan. My room rate was inclusive of breakfast, so I opted for Ham & Egg Toast and chilled soya bean to be sent to my room at 6am. The toast was simple yet delicious. For sandwiches, I would usually eat off the side crust first because the crusts taste plain. But the toast that the B&B provided was perfect. The egg and ham covers every inch of the bread and every bite of it was heaven!
After breakfast, I walked to 大南门城. I'm not sure what it's called in English, but it's directly translated to 'The Big South Gate City'. A few citizens were exercising in the area as well. According to the introduction provided at the entrance, there were a total of 7-8 gates that protect the inner city since 1725. This big south gate was one of the 7-8 gates.
Next, I walked to Koxinga Shrine 延平郡王祠, which is 5-7 minutes walk away from The Big South Gate City. The Shrine has a beautiful pond and garden. I did not enter the Shrine because I wasn't very interested, and I might not have enough time for my plans later.
I went to the Confucius Temple 孔子庙 next, which took me around 10 minutes by foot. The temple was the first institute of learning in Taiwan. Again, I did not enter the temple cause I wasn't that interested in it.
I walked to the Tainan Train Station after the temple, and it took me around 30 minutes to get there. I didn't want to take a cab so that I could save more and see more at the same time. I bought a train ticket to ShanHua 善化 for the Wall Mural Village 彩绘村.
I've checked online and discovered that Bus Orange 2 (橘2) goes to the Wall Mural Village from ShanHua train station. However, I did not know that the bus only operates at specific timings. I arrived ShanHua train station around 10am, but the next bus will only depart at 11.45am. With no other options, I took a cab which costs NTD170. The taxi driver asked if I wanted him to meet me later for a ride back. I declined his offer as I was determined to try out the buses in Tainan.
Before entering the village, I re-confirmed the timing for the next bus back to the train station . I was there at 10.20am and the next bus will be arriving at 11.45am. I had one hour to look around.
The sun was glaring that day, and most of the pictures I took was taken 'blindly'. I couldn't see the screen at all cause the sun was too strong. I had to hide under a shade to re-check the pictures before proceeding to the next mural. I was thrilled when I came across One Piece murals!

I realized one hour isn't enough to explore the village thoroughly. There's just too much to see!

I took the bus back to the train station and bought train tickets to LiuYing 柳营. I wanted to go to the Holland Village that features Holland Windmills.
I read online that a bicycle rental is located at the train station. However when I arrived LiuYing station, I couldn't see any. It was too far to walk over to the Holland Village as well. I gave up visiting the Holland Village, and headed towards XinYing 新营 with the plan of visiting the hot spring at GuanZiLing 关子岭. But I gave up on that as well, cause I read online that it will take 2 hours bus ride to get there.
*For those who wish to visit the rural parts of Taiwan, be sure to do a thorough research on bus timings and duration.*

So I bought a train ticket back to Tainan. I slept on the train and nearly missed my stop. I wanted to return to my B&B for some rest and to charge my mobile. But I figured it would be best to first grab lunch somewhere nearby. I walked along the street that I went yesterday, and bought Papaya Milk. I read that it was one of the popular beverages in Taiwan.
As I was wandering around and looking for things to eat, I spotted this shop selling 棺材板 Coffin Bread. I remember seeing this shop being featured online. I immediately Googled and yes it was very popular! It is located in a small alley in between shop lots.I wouldn't have noticed it if I didn't look to my left to check for cars passing by. I went in and ordered Coffin Bread and Fried Rice with Egg.

The Coffin Bread was AWESOME! It was so good I wanted to have another serving! It has seafood, ham and vege mixed with white creamy sauce. So GOOD! The bread was so crispy, but not hard to the tooth.
The red sauce on top of the fried rice with egg is NOT ketchup. It was either strawberry or raspberry sauce, which surprised me cause I've never had fried rice with sweet sauce before. It tasted okay I guess.
After that, I went back to the B&B to rest. I was exhausted from the heat at the village and also from waking up so early in the morning. My phone battery was almost flat as well.
I bought an USB adapter from a souvenir shop so that I could charge my phone through a power socket. But the charging was very slow because Taiwan uses a 110V power voltage instead of the usual 240V that I'm used to.
As soon as I've recharged myself and my phone, I head out for the famous Flowers Night Market 花园夜市.

Yes I ate Fried Crickets! It wasn't on my Must-Eat-List, but when I saw it, I was like 'I Must Try!!!'.
I could only taste the seasoning at first, but then a sourish, bitterish and creamy taste came to surface.
The online community states that Milk Fish 虱目鱼 is Tainan's specialty, so I bought some deep fried milk fish to try as well.
After 2 hours of pigging out, I walked back to the hotel and stopped by 7-11 for some beer. You HAVE to try the local beers no matter where you go. I bought the grape flavored beer. It just tasted like ordinary grape juice.

Day Three 30/11/15
It's my last day in Tainan. I was determined to wake up early to try the 'salty porridge' at Ah Tang Salty Porridge 阿堂咸粥.
I woke up at 4.45am, showered, rested and then walked over to Ah Tang Salty Porridge . It was a 5 minutes walk away from my B&B. When I arrived, only 1 other customer was seated at the eatery. I ordered the Milk Fish Salty Porridge 虱目鱼咸粥 which costs NTD100. I was told that it will only be ready after 6am, so I sat and waited for it. But around 5.45am they served it to me saying the chefs prepared it earlier today. WOOHOO! The porridge was awesome! The broth is tasty and the fish is so nice and tender. Plus there's a few oysters inside as well! I absolutely love it. It's a MUST TRY in Tainan!

After breakfast, I went back to my B&B and packed my luggage. The check out time was 12pm, so I made sure I had enough time to visit AnPing district 安平区 before that. I stuffed my breakfast toast into my backpack and head out around 8am.
It took me 1 hour to walk over to AnPing district. If you're wondering why I didn't take the bus, well, I thought all buses in Tainan is similar to the ones in ShanHua where there are specific timings for the rides. So I didn't even consider taking the bus. Along my walk towards AnPing, I passed by some bus stations and decided to look at the timings. It turns out that the buses will pass by every 15 minutes or so. I was already reaching AnPing at that time, so I decided to walk the remaining journey.

My main objective of visiting AnPing is to look at the TreeHouse. It was originally a proper house but then it was abandoned and trees took over the place. The entrance fee was NTD50 for an adult.
There are 3 main sites in the area. I'm sorry but I didn't read the site descriptions because it's all in Mandarin, and I get confused and loses my focus when I read too many Chinese words. The first site was a building that houses long stone tables with calligraphy brushes and streams of water. Visitors are encouraged to dip the brush in the water and write on the stones. It was so fun. Plus I was the only visitor at that time, so I got the entire place for myself!
Visitors can also buy gift cards and make stamp prints on it. The stamp prints are huge and one gift card can only fit 2 stamp prints. The cards are sold at NTD15 each. There were 8 stamp designs, so I bought 4 cards to get all the stamp designs.
After purchasing the cards, the staff will provide you with the ink and a clean stamper to press on the cards. So here's what you do, you use the ink stamper on the second picture to coat the design with black ink. After that, you place the card carefully on the design (with the blank page facing down), and use the clean stamper to press on the card.
Below is how it looked like after stamping.
Below is how it looked like after stamping.
After this, I went to the second site. It was a motion-censored gallery. Visitors get to listen to An Ping's history amplified through the speakers as they walk along the corridor. It was scary with all the voices bouncing through the hallway as I was the only visitor at that time.
I've read in a random blog that visitors should bring a blank note book when they travel to Taiwan, cause there'll be stamps at the attractions for you to use for free. Just like the one below. The stamp designs will be related to the attraction that you're at. I had a stamp print from Chihkan Tower on my first day here too.
I walked over to the tree house after that. It was AWESOME. I love the tree house! It looked spooky at first, but as more visitors came in, I felt safe again. Haha! Check out the pictures below! I've also attached a YouTube video which I took while climbing up the stairs of the tree house. It's fairly wobbly, but please bear with it.
After the tree house, I visited the AnPing Fort which is a 5 minutes walk away. I did not spend much time here cause I need to rush back to the hotel for check-out. The entrance fee was NTD50 per adult. I climbed 44 steps up the tower and I was so exhausted upon reaching the top. But the view was nice and there's a chair for me to rest on too.
I rushed to the bus stop after getting my red tea ice cream, and waited 15 minutes for the next bus. I was glad that I purchased the iPass card 一卡通 on my first day in KaoHsiung, which can be used on most public transportation in Taiwan .
After checking out of the hotel, I took Bus 1 to Tainan Train Station and purchased a ticket towards KaoHsiung.
Once I arrive at KaoHsiung station, I walked to the MRT station and headed towards City Council Station 市议会. My hotel is located 5 minutes away (on foot) from City Council Station's Exit 3. I reached the hotel at 2pm, however the check-in time is at 3pm. So I left my luggage with the hotel and went out for some sightseeing.
I took the MRT to YanChengPu Station 盐埕埔. I wanted to visit The Pier-2 Art Center 驳二艺术特区 that I found online. I noticed a shop renting bicycles before leaving the MRT station, so I rented one at NTD100 for the whole day. The shop owner gave me a map and recommended places to go in that area. So I cycled along the suggested route.
The first stop is The Pier-2 Art Center which takes 5 minutes of cycling. I was quite wary as I cycle, cause the road system in Taiwan is different from Malaysia and Singapore. Their driver side is on the left, so all the cars are driving on the right side of the road.

I wasn't able to get close to the architectures because the bicycle can't go on the grass to prevent the wheels from getting pricked. Plus I don't feel safe leaving my bicycle alone by the roadside. I missed out on a lot of photo opportunities for being unable to go on the grass area.
After The Pier-2 Art Center, I cycled for another 5 minutes to the XiZiWan Tunnel 西子湾隧道 that connects to Zhong Shan University 中山大学.

As I was exiting the University, I cycled along a route that lines with the ocean, and it's so awesome! The view and the wind was great!
I cycled further down in search of the Love Pier 真爱码头 and GuangRong Pier 光荣码头. From what I read, the Guang Rong Pier used to house the Giant Yellow Duck. I'm not sure if it's still there, but I'd like to take a peek since it's not too far away.

However, with my rotten luck, the Love Pier and GuangRong Pier was both surrounded by wires and metal plates for renovation. Plus the Yellow Duck shouldn't be there anymore. Sigh. Anyway, because I only had porridge and toast in the morning, I was starving and tired. So I returned the bicycle around 4.30pm and went back to the hotel to rest.
This FX Inn reminded me of my previous work place in Singapore - Studio M Hotel. The lobby concept is similar, with an island reception and a back office behind the wall. The room is very similar as well, they have a separate shower and toilet, plus the hand basin is outside the toilet. There's a sliding door that separates the bedroom as well.
I showered and rested until 6pm. Meanwhile, I sketched up a few places to visit at night.
I visited the Urban Spotlight, which is 10 minutes walk away. After that, I took the MRT from Central Park Station to Formosa Boulevard Station to look at the Dome of Light. And then from there, I took Exit 11 towards LiuHe Night Market 六合夜市.
I tried the oyster omelette and taiwan sausage with sticky rice 大肠包小肠. I Googled for the Must-Try dishes in LiuHe, and the grilled meat from 烤肉之家 was recommended, as well as the Papaya Milk from 郑老牌. I highly recommend the papaya milk from 郑老牌, because it's really good! Please buy from 郑老牌, NOT 正大牌. There are other stalls that sells the same thing with similar stall names, but don't get confused. The awesome papaya milk is from 郑老牌 that is near to Exit 11 of the MRT station.

It was only 8pm when I'm done eating. It was too early to call it a day, so I searched up on night sceneries in KaoHsiung '高雄夜景' on Google, and The Tower of Light 光之塔 was the first picture that popped up on screen. It looked amazing on the photos, so I have to go see it for myself!
I followed the blogger's instructions to proceed to HouYi MRT Station 后驿 to rent a public bicycle. This is one of the things that I love about KaoHsiung. Public bicycles are placed at each MRT stations that can be rented at anytime of the day at a cheap rate. You can locate the bicycles by referring to the MRT signage which will state which exit the bicycles are placed at.

For foreigners, we can only use our credit cards to rent the bicycles.
This is what I did to rent the bicycle:
Each bicycle is parked in front of a number. For instance, the bicycle that I want to rent is parked at number 15. So I go over to the machine shown in the first picture, and insert my credit card into the card slot. The screen monitor will ask you to remove the card, and key in the card's security code. If the card is accepted, it will ask you to key in the number of the bicycle that you want to rent, and then it will instruct you to head over to the bicycle, and push the red button to release it from the lock.
Please note that sometimes the bicycles are not located right at the exit of the MRT, some of them are placed on the opposite side of the road, or a little further away. Look around the area before giving up on the bicycles.
As for the rental rate, the first hour is free. Every subsequent hour will be at NTD10, which I find very reasonable.
So after I got my bicycle, I followed Google Maps and rode to the Love River. I cycled along the river for about 15 minutes before I caught a glimpse of the Tower of Light. I was so excited because it already looked so beautiful from far.

I don't think pictures do the Tower of Light any justice, cause it looks so much prettier in real life! You can actually climb up the tower, but my public bicycle doesn't come with a lock, so I couldn't just leave it alone. Sigh. Next time, Tower of Light, I will come back for you!
After much cycling around, I returned the bicycle to the MRT station and head back to the hotel. On my way back, I stopped by a 7-11 to buy more Taiwan only products.

I Googled on the Must-Buy items from Taiwan 7-11, and they suggested the Hey Song soft drinks 黑松, the Caramel Pudding 统一布丁and the soft boiled eggs. I bought the honey flavored beer cause I was curious, but it just tasted weird.
Other than the honey beer, the other online recommendations were all good. The egg has a soft and seducing egg yolk, and the pudding was great as well.

Day Four 01/12/15
My plan for the morning was Urban Spotlight -> MRT to SanDuo Station 三多商圈 -> SinGuang Pier 新光码头.
I wanted to visit Urban Spotlight again because I felt that there are more things to see in the daylight. It's a 10 minutes walk. I made use of my lovely selfie stick for more pictures!

I took the MRT from Central Garden station towards SanDuo station in order to visit the SinGuang Pier. I read online that the place is photogenic and I wanted to check it out. I rented a public bicycle and cycled towards the Pier. But after searching and searching, I don't see where the entrance is. The signboard is there with the direction towards the Pier, but it was all closed up with wires and metal plates just like the Love Pier and GuangRong Pier. I asked the guard from a nearby building, but he wasn't sure either. So I tried to enter from the only opening I see from the road. But it was all mud and uneven surfaces, plus the pedestrian entrance was blocked off as well. At the end, I gave up and concluded that all the attraction piers are closed off for renovation. Nonetheless, I was able to witness the tallest building in KaoHsiung:- the 85 Sky Tower Hotel. |
I returned the rented bicycle and planned for my next destination. I chose to take MRT towards ZuoYing station 左营. It states online that the Lotus Pond 莲池潭 and the Dragon Tiger Tower 龙虎塔 was around that area. It took me 5 minutes to locate the bicycles as it was hidden from my view. I followed Google Maps and cycled towards the Botanical Garden 原生植物园. The path through the garden was really pretty!
It was a 7 minutes ride through the garden trail, which then leads to a bridge that goes over the highway towards the Lotus Pond. It was a tough ride up the slope but the way down was fabulous! I kept repeating 先苦后甜 (xian ku hou tian) to myself while riding up the slope haha.
Before reaching the Lotus Pond, I was greeted by a great scenery around a lake. A store that sells KaoHsiung local products was there as well, and their lawn was full of photo opportunities.

I could see the Dragon Tiger Tower at the opposite side of the lake. So I cycled around the lake, following the bicycle path, and about half way around, I found the gorgeous Lotus Pond.

After another 5 minutes of cycling, I reached the Dragon Tiger Tower!

It was a really hot day, so I cycled back after looking at the attractions briefly. I followed a different path through the botanical garden so that I could cover more ground.
After returning the rented bicycle, I took the MRT to XiZiWan station to visit the Martyrs' Shrine 忠烈祠. My main objective of visiting the shrine was for its famous LOVE sculpture that overlooks the city. I looked it up on Google Maps, and it seemed to show that it's located in the hills.
Without a second thought, I rented another public bicycle and looked for the way to enter the hills. I tried to speculate the easiest route to reach my destination.
After deciding on the trail, I head off towards a possible entrance shown on Google Maps. After a 10 minutes ride, I spotted the road sign that states 'Martyrs' Shrine'. I happily follow the signage and find myself entering the woods.
The road up to the shrine resembles the winding road that leads to Batu Ferringhi in Penang.
The roads are steep and narrow. At first I was afraid that bicycles aren't allowed, but after seeing another cyclist zoomed past me, I began cycling up slowly.
For someone who doesn't exercise, I swore I almost died a few times on my way up the hill. My legs were too weak to pedal up hill, so I ended up pushing my bicycle whenever the road turns steep.

I kept convincing myself to not give up. It was a tough climb, I felt out of breath most of the time. I felt like passing out and hoped I would reach the peak soon. And when I started seeing cars parked by the road side, I realized that I MADE IT TO THE TOP!!!
The view was so beautiful. It was definitely worth the climb. I am convinced that my determination is what got me to the top. I'm so proud of myself!

But I still don't see the LOVE sculpture, so I figured it should be at the top of the staircase that's heading towards the shrine. But with the p ublic bicycle, I don't have a lock to secure it. So I looked for a secluded hiding place and ditched the bicycle there.
Even though there aren't many people around, I still don't want to risk losing the bicycle. Hence, I raced up the stairs and scanned around for the sculpture. It was on my immediate left. I was in awe. It was so pretty with the city view in the background.
After taking pictures in a hurry, I raced back down to my bicycle and went down the hill. It was a smooth ride down, but I still had to watch out for cars. I was sure I've cycled for more than 1 hour up the hill, but when I returned the bicycle, it showed that I've only rented it for 45 minutes! Woohoo! Not bad, not bad at all baby!!
I was glad that I had lunch at the MRT station earlier, or else I'd have fainted halfway up!
Anyway, I've decided to visit the QiJin Island 旗津岛, where I would need to take a ferry to cross the sea. The port was a 15 minutes walk away from XiZiWan station. On the way to the port, I spotted a nicely decorated store that sells red bean ice desserts. I was feeling hot and thirsty, so I searched it up on Google and was glad that the dessert store has great reviews! I went in and ordered their Matcha with red bean shaved ice. It was very refreshing and absolutely fabulous for the hot weather.

I walked to the port after dessert and waited 10 minutes for the next ferry. My main aim for visiting QiJin was to watch the sunset as recommended by the bicycle shop owner.
It's a 5-7 minutes ferry ride and the iPass card can be used to pay for the ride. Once I've landed on QiJin, I immediately rented a bicycle to go around the island. The staff explained the places to me and I head off searching for the Fort and Light Tower.
I followed the road signs at first but the signs were gone after awhile and I couldn't locate the entrance towards the Fort and Tower. I remembered the bicycle shop owner from YanPuCheng station mentioned that the sunset is at 4.30pm. Hence I was rushing the entire time in order not to miss it.
But I was being too panicky, cause all the attractions that I'm going to are along the beach. So I could see the sunset from any of the location. Since I couldn't locate the Fort and Tower, I changed my plan and looked for the Sea Shell Museum instead. I guess this isn't a good time to tour Taiwan cause the Sea Shell Museum was closed for renovation too!

The staff explained to me earlier that the beach is covered in dark sand, hence they named it 黑沙滩 'black sandy beach'. I cycled along the beach on the designated bicycle pathway. I tried to look for a way to go closer to the giant sea shell. I entered an area with a lot of trees but equipped with proper pathways. I traced the giant sea shell and found a small trail that leads to it.
The trail was supposedly blocked off, but I guess someone shifted it slightly. I was able to squeeze through together with my bicycle. I carefully walked towards the giant sea shell, but I was afraid it's a private area and I might get shot by a gun if I trespass. So I ended up taking a picture from a distance and ran away quickly.
After the giant sea shell, I cycled to the War & Peace Memorial Garden 战争与和平纪念公园
Just another short distance from the Memorial Garden, I've arrived at the Windmill Garden 风车公园. The view is great, I was totally in love with this place.
After the Windmill Garden, I cycled back to locate the Fort and Light Tower again. At that time, it was already 4.30pm, but the sun was still up high. I cycled quickly in hope that I could make it in time to watch the sunset from the Fort and Light Tower.
At last, I found the entrance to those 2 attractions. It was a narrow street that leads to a small parking space for bicycles only. I locked my bicycle and make my way up to the Fort. It was a steep road ahead, but I persevered. I was surprised by myself for being able to climb uphill after what I've been through in the morning.
I was afraid of heights. As I climbed up to the roof top of the Fort, I was half frozen. I had to walk slowly to not embarrass myself hahaha. In order to make my trip worthwhile, I had to swallow my fear.

The sun did not set yet, so I figured I still had time to rush to the Light Tower. I sprinted off the Fort, down the slope and jogged to the entrance to the Light Tower. It's another steep climb ahead!
I saw the ocean of QiJin Island when I'm at the Fort. And from the climb up to the Light Tower, I get to see the ocean in between QiJin Island and KaoHsiung.

The slope was torturous as well. When I finally get to the actual entrance of the Tower, the guard came out and closed the door. Apparently it's closed at 6pm. *sigh* But at least I get to look at the sun set from that altitude.
I cycled as fast as I could back to the beach to catch another glimpse of the sunset, but it has already went down the horizon. I returned the bicycle back to the shop and went back to KaoHsiung.
My phone battery was flat out, so I head back to my hotel to charge its battery and my energy.
There's a laundry room at the top floor of the hotel, so I washed my clothes while waiting for my phone to be charged.
Around 8pm, I departed for RuiFeng Night Market 瑞丰夜市 located near KaoHsiung Arena station 高雄巨蛋. It was much bigger than LiuHe Night Market, with more variety of food. They sell more merchandises in RuiFeng as well.

I called it a day after the night market as I was exhausted from touring the city in the day.
Day Five 02/12/15
I had a really packed itinerary for the past few days, so I dedicate the 5th day to shopping! I Googled on Taiwan souvenir. I wanted to look for something else other than the pineapple pastry. I found a bakery that is famous for their pineapple pastry as well as other baking products. So I decided to check it out.
I went to SanDuo MRT station. My butt hurts from excessive cycling yesterday, so I chose to walk from the MRT station to the bakery, which takes around 20 minutes.

The interior was very nice. It portrays a very classy image. There's a small eating area right next to the entrance, and when you walk past the store, you could peek into their pastry kitchen. I didn't dare to take pictures of their interior cause some stores have a very strict no-photography policy. When I was browsing through their breads, the staff brought out trays of freshly baked Green Onion Buns. Everybody was being panicky and started approaching the buns, I was right next to it so I quickly grabbed one.
As I was queuing up, I glanced at other customers' tray and saw heaps of green onion buns on it. I guess those buns are really popular.

The green onion bun was alright, but the croissant and the sausage bun was awesome! I've never had sausage buns with a sausage SO juicy! Usually the buns that I had elsewhere have dried up sausages, but this sausage bun from Wu Bao Chun is just awesome!
I'm not sure if you can see the juice, but that's a quality sausage in there bro!
Also, they have a timetable that shows the type of buns that will be sold at a specific time period.

I finished my buns as I walk back to the MRT. I was determined to buy some souvenirs for my colleagues and housemates.
As I was wandering around, I walked past a store selling cookies. After checking online, I realized that these cookies are not available in Macau. The store is called XiaoLin 小林煎饼.
The store doesn't accept credit cards, and I don't have much cash on me as well. So I couldn't buy a lot of cookies. I picked randomly from the shelves, with no idea whether it's any good.
After paying for the cookies, I crossed the road to visit XinGuang SanYue新光三越. This departmental store has been mentioned in Taiwanese TV shows frequently, and I am curious of how it looks like. I was surprised to see that the staffs will bow and greet you every time you walk past them. I felt so uncomfortable. I had to bow back because I can't just walk past doing nothing when someone else bows at me! So I escaped the building as fast as I could.
I planned to return to the hotel for some rest. But as I walk towards the MRT station, I chanced upon a store called PoYa. It's a store that resembles Daiso, but the products are not sold at a fixed price nor do they sell only Japanese products.
I browsed through their beauty product aisles and I was so happy when I saw the SexyLook Strawberry Mask that I've been using during my college times! It's very efficient in removing the black heads and even my brother loves to use it. It's on a 1 for 1 promotion at NTD399, which is so worth it! I bought some other masks as well, which is also on a 1 for 1 promotion.
After shopping, I went back to the hotel to rest and to stow away all my shopping bags!
For lunch, I went to the Ramen shop next to the hotel and ordered 豚骨叉烧拉面. It was AWESOME!!!

After lunch, I took the MRT to KaiXuan station 凯旋 to visit Dream Mall. The Dream Mall's shuttle bus signage will be visible upon exiting the station. It will take 10 minutes to arrive Dream Mall using the shuttle service.
Why Dream Mall you say?
Because it has a huge Ferris Wheel on the roof top! I'm afraid of heights, but I just had to ride it to look at KaoHsiung up high!
It was only 3pm. In order to capture the night view of KaoHsiung, I had to 'waste' some time shopping at H&M, but I didn't manage to get anything for myself. I was very tired from all the travelling, hence I looked for spa centres for a massage.
I passed by Bonnie House and the rates for their massages are reasonable. I went in to enquire, and was very happy to find that their full body massage is only at NTD2100!

It was my first time at a spa, so I was surprised to know that we have to shower before the massage. Usually the massage session will start immediately for the other massage parlors that I've been to.
Anyway, the spa was good. It took 1.5 hours, so by the time I'm finished it's already 5.30pm. The sky has not dimmed completely, so I went for more shopping at Cosmed. I wanted to buy some facial sets as a Xmas present for my colleague, but I couldn't find a suitable one. Instead I bought Dr. Wu's facial cleanse and toner for my housemates.
From what I read online, Dr. Wu is quite popular in Taiwan and it seems quite effective as well. It's a clinical skincare brand so I guess it should be good! I bought Dr. Wu's Intensive Hydrating Treatment set for me as well.
After that I went up to the roof top for the Ferris Wheel! It's HUGE!

I bought the entrance ticket for 1 adult, and the cashier paused for awhile before processing my ONE adult ticket on the Ferris Wheel. I guess it's quite weird to ride on the Ferris Wheel alone huh?
I was afraid of heights. As my cubicle ascends higher, I held on tighter to the handrail.

After the Ferris Wheel, I took the shuttle back to the MRT station and then back to the hotel to charge my phone. I've decided to visit LiuHe Night Market again because it's very organized and clean compared to the other night markets.
After dinner, I looked for a public bicycle so that I could cycle back to the hotel to do some currency exchange. I'm only left with NTD200 which is not enough for more shopping. I don't have enough for the train fare as well. After searching up and down, left and right for available bicycles, I finally saw 2 girls returning the bikes from afar. I raced across the road to get myself a bicycle.
I cycled from Formosa Boulevard station to City Council station and returned the bicycle there. But on the contrary to what the hotel facilities info states, the front desk doesn't do currency exchange. So I borrowed the hotel's bicycle and cycled to DaLi Supermarket 大立百货 for the currency exchange. I took a queue number and waited for about 30 minutes at the customer service center.
Once done, I cycled to 新崛江 that has stalls selling products such as clothes, socks, accessories and most importantly, food! I wanted to shop for more souvenirs for my friends.
I parked my hotel's bicycle together with other motorcycles. so I was quite worried about its 'safety' and had to hurry with my shopping.

Day Six, Last Day! 03/12/15
I did not want to waste my last day in Taiwan. So I woke up early in the morning and went to 7-11 to buy breakfast. I again, searched Google for the Must Try Instant Noodles in Taiwan, and I bought the Man Han 满汉大餐 Chilli Pork flavored instant noodles. I also bought soft boiled eggs to mix in my noodles, and a bottle of coffee as recommended online.
I folded the lid of the noodle cup into a cone shape to act as my small bowl. I learnt this tip from watching Simon and Martina's channel 'Eat Your Kimchi'. It's a good tip cause I can cool off my noodles and avoid it from dripping all over the place.
As soon as I finished my breakfast, I went out for more shopping. I organized my luggage in advance to see how much more I can fit in. I went back to the Poya store at SanDuo Shopping District because it has so many different brands under one roof.
I shopped for 1 hour and then rushed back for check-out. The receptionists called at 12.10pm to remind me to get lost. I was worried that my luggage may be overweight as I only bought 15kg of check-in luggage. I couldn't tell how heavy my luggage was from lifting it, so I did some calculations in my head for the estimated weight that I have.
Before leaving for Taiwan, my luggage was 6kg. So I'd have 9kg allowance for all my souvenir. If I were to consider 2 boxes of masks as 1kg, I should be able to pass the weight test. Fortunately my luggage weighs only 13kg. Phew! I was paranoid after I underestimated my luggage weight when I left Singapore in April.
My flight is scheduled to depart at 4.05pm. I was at the airport early so I waited for time to pass at the Charging Station. The check-in counter opened at 2pm, and I went to the Airport Lounge after I've checked-in my luggage.

My After Thoughts
Despite being a last minute decision to visit Southern Taiwan, I was glad that everything went smoothly. At first I was worried about my safety, but Taiwan turns out to be quite safe! The key is to always be careful of your belongings, especially at crowded places. Keep your valuables close to you.
Whenever I'm using my backpack, I will place a recyclable bag at the bottom and another recyclable bag/scarf over my stuffs to prevent my things from being taken away easily.
I will always bring a stretchable pouch to keep my extra cash and credit cards. The pouch will be clipped around my waist. I will then hide the pouch behind the belt line of my pants so that it won't be visible to others.
I would like to thank Google.com and Google Maps for guiding me throughout the entire trip. Without Google Maps I would be so lost in the city. Thank you 大哥大 for providing me with the unlimited 7 days data package. Without a reliable network, I could not have been able to search on all the attractions in Taiwan.
And most importantly, a huge thanks to all the Taiwanese who offered assistance. Whenever I looked lost on the streets, there will always be someone who asks if I need any help. They've been guiding me along the way and they're just so friendly!
I would return to Taiwan next year! See you soon, Taiwan!
